Meet Jon
Jon is a United States Marine Corps combat veteran, devoted father, and co-host of the Shamrocks and Shield Walls Podcast. After serving as a Combat Engineer with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Jon was medically retired from the Marine Corps in 2013. His military service shaped his appreciation for leadership, resilience, and the sacrifices made throughout history.
Although he doesn't consider himself a historian, Jon has a lifelong passion for history and enjoys diving into everything from ancient civilizations and medieval warfare to modern military conflicts. As a practicing Norse pagan, he also has a deep appreciation for Norse history, mythology, and the traditions that continue to inspire him today.
When he's not recording the podcast, you'll usually find him on a softball field coaching 8U softball alongside his friend and co-host, Brandyn. Watching young athletes develop confidence, learn teamwork, and fall in love with the game has become one of his greatest passions. Whether it's helping a player improve their swing or celebrating their first big play, Jon believes coaching is about building character as much as building athletes.
On Shamrocks and Shield Walls, Jon brings curiosity, military experience, and a passion for meaningful conversations. His goal is to create a podcast that is informative, entertaining, and welcoming to anyone who enjoys history, great discussions, and the stories that have shaped our world.
Meet Brandyn
Brandyn is the co-host of the Shamrocks and Shield Walls Podcast, a dedicated youth softball coach, former MMA fighter, and lifelong student of competition. Proud of his Irish heritage, he enjoys exploring the history, traditions, and culture of Ireland while embracing the values of perseverance and community that have long been associated with it.
His background in mixed martial arts taught him discipline, mental toughness, and the value of constant self-improvement—qualities he now brings to coaching and everyday life. Alongside Jon, Brandyn coaches 8U softball, where he enjoys helping young athletes develop their skills, confidence, and love for the game. He believes the lessons learned through sports—hard work, accountability, and perseverance—can last a lifetime.
Outside of coaching, Brandyn is an avid knife collector with a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and blade design. His fascination with Japanese culture extends far beyond collecting; he has a genuine passion for Japanese history, traditions, martial arts, and craftsmanship. Whether it's discussing Japan's rich history, feudal culture, martial traditions, or the artistry behind a handcrafted blade, Brandyn is always eager to learn and share what he discovers.
On the podcast, Brandyn brings energy, humor, and a unique perspective that blends athletics, history, and culture. Together, he and Jon create conversations that are informative, entertaining, and never afraid to explore topics from a different point of view.
